Many pro and cons about defragment function in your PC. but I like defragmenting my PC. lol You can imagine like this

Think of your computer’s hard disk as a library. If the books are not filed away properly, they become very difficult to find and the library becomes very inefficient. The same thing happens to your hard disk when it’s fragmented. Fragmentation occurs as files are created, edited, saved and deleted. The operating system’s filing mechanism does not save one file in one place, instead it breaks them up into to “fragments” and spreads them around the disk saving pieces of the file wherever free space is available.

Therefore, when the read head attempts to access the fragmented file, it has to work extra hard as it tries to find and access one of pieces. More work means more time spent which means a fragmented hard drive could cost a company employee down time and worn out hardware. In addition, the overall system performance and reliability decreases and the PC slows since the hard drive is the slowest component of the PC (it’s mechanical) and fragmentation only aggravates this problem. Defrag (or defragmentation) restores these file fragments creating not only continuous files but blocks of free space as well. Defrag organizes the books for the library. Now your computer only has to look in one place for the file instead of scouring the entire library.

A defragmented drive is indispensable. Defrag improves system performance, reliability, reduces battery power consumption for laptops (less work for the drive, remember) and increases the overall life of the hard drive.

I like to defragmenting my PC at least twice a month.. so the defragmenting time is not too long.

Before defragging your machine, close all open Windows programs.

Step 1:

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/ScanDisk

Follow this shorthand until you open ScanDisk. If you have not done a ScanDisk in awhile, I would suggest clicking on Thorough. If you have a weekly schedule for maintenance, then just the Standard will be sufficient. Select the hard drive you wish to scan and click on start. After this process is finished, go to the next step.

Step 2:

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter

Follow the shorthand steps until you open Disk Defragmenter.

Select the drive to defrag and click ok and it will defrag your hard drive.

Another way :

Double click on My Computer and right click on the drive you wish to defrag. Select properties. Go to the Tool tab. You can select the button Check Now by Error-Checking Status to use the ScanDisk tool, then select the button Defragment Now by Defragmentation status.

Depending on how large your hard drive is, this process will take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour.

It is advisable to do this at the end of the day when you don’t need to use your machine.

Using Software

This is my favorite defragment software. But I lost it since my PC is crash T__T

this is the file : Auslogics Disk Defrag

If you can download it, would you be so kind to upload it into local host such as kitaupload or Indowebster? Thx a lot ^^
